It is believed that Dr. John Ziegler created Dianabol. But it should be noted that Zeigler had nothing to do with the creation of the original Dianabol. The real inventors were organic chemists working in a laboratory halfway around the world.  The drug was created by a pharmaceutical in Germany.

The Real Creator of Methandrostenolone

The chemical makeup of Methandrostenolone is l7 beta-hydroxy-17 alpha-methylandrosta-1, 4-dien-3-on. It was first created in 1955. The company was called CIBA Pharmaceuticals. The European researchers who created Dianabol probably never heard of John Ziegler during the creation of the drug.

Listed here are the scientists working on the drug, Albert Wettstein, Alfred Hunger, Charles Meystre, Ludwig Ehmann, Ernst Vischer, Hans Peter Frey and Walter Voser. This list if from the scientific journal that published the creation of Methandrostenolone called Helvetica Chimica Acta.

The CIBA researchers are famous in their field. Wettstein collaborated with the Leopold Ružička’s research team that won the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their remarkable work on the synthesis of synthetic testosterone. This was the very first synthetic testosterone. The invention of Dianabol was just a cherry on top of this huge sundae. Learn more at

Why then has Dr. John Ziegler been erroneously credited with inventing Dianabol?

The fictional story where a small-town country doctor created a synthetic anabolic steroid to level the playing field between American Olympic lifters and their testosterone-using Russian counterparts was to blame. It certainly made for a feel-good story for those conservative nationalist during the height of the Cold War. The misinformation became part of steroid urban legend with every re-telling of the story in the bodybuilding press and even mainstream journalism.

However, even though Dr. Ziegler did not invent the drug, it does not mean that he is not important in this history of the drug in the United States. Ziegler was the one who introduced the drug during the cold war to American Athletes. He also looked after this introduction of the drug and the dosage control.

Ziegler was the first person to introduce the drug due to his connection with the CIBA. He had access to the CIBA laboratory in Summit (New Jersey) during the 1950s and was already supplying weightlifters with testosterone propionate for research purposes. However, there was no active steroid research at the CIBA facility in New Jersey; all steroid hormone synthesis was reserved for the corporate headquarters in Switzerland. He had the dosage of 10 milligrams of Dianabol per day administered to weightlifters, John Grimek, Bill March, Tony Garcy and Louis Riecke. They were the very first athletes to use Dianabol from Zeigler.

Dianabol continued to be one of the favorite drugs by bodybuilders and athletes in the US. It currently remains one of the most popular steroids used by contemporary bodybuilders. With the US seal of approval, many other bodybuilders learned about the drug and soon after, started to use the drug.
